The “Brit-Pack” Unanimously Pick Bisping to Win

bispingThis should come as absolutely no surprise, but when it came to making a prediction for the upcoming battle between Dan Henderson and their fellow Brit, Michael Bisping, the collective group that's become known as "The Brit Pack" unanimously chose Bisping to take home top honors.  That's right, it was a 6-0 margain.  Surprised?  We didn't think so.

Brit Pack Shows Support in Force

That said, as we approach the monumental night of fight's that will be UFC 100, the fight between Henderson and Bisping has been one of the most hotly debated of all the fights on the card.  We just caught wind that "The Brit Pack" which is comprised of some of the best British fighters in the world, including: Dan Hardy, Paul Kelly, Terry Etim, Ross Pearson, Paul Taylor and John Hathaway, have plenty to say when it comes to predicting the final outcome.  Check out some of these choice quotes:

From Dan "The Outlaw Hardy:"

“My prediction is Bisping by unanimous decision. I see the fight being a back-and-forth battle, with Bisping avoiding big haymakers and fighting out of the clinch quite a lot. I can’t see Henderson getting stopped, but I think Mike will outwork him and land the better shots. Bisping will steadily land quality strikes on Dan and avoid getting put on his back."

Paul "Tellys" Kelly:

“I’m not being biased because we’re teammates, but I truly believe Mike will dominate Henderson. With the form that Mike is showing right now and the shape that he’s in, I don’t see how many middleweights can beat him. He’s only a couple of steps away from a title now and I’ve never seen him hungrier. I’m convinced he’ll be holding that UFC middleweight title by the end of the year. The Mike Bisping that we all see in the gym is unbeatable at middleweight. He’s too fit, too strong and too good for all of them."

Terry Etim:

“I see Mike taking the fight and winning in style. He needs to use his footwork well and avoid Henderson’s takedowns. Even if Henderson does take Mike down, I can still see Mike just getting straight back up. Mike is in his prime right now and he seems to be getting better with each and every fight. I’ve got no doubt he’ll raise his game even further against Henderson. This is Mike’s time now. Henderson was a double-champion in PRIDE and beating him will be a massive scalp for Mike."

Ross "Real Deal" Pearson:

“This is Mike’s time to shine now. He’s proven himself in the UFC with wins over some good guys and I now think he’s ready to take on the elite level. Before The Ultimate Fighter I had no idea how good Mike was. I’d always looked up to him as a fighter, but I never truly knew how good he was before I started training with him. It was a complete shock to me when I discovered just how good Mike was in all departments - stand-up, wrestling and jiu-jitsu. Mike wasn’t even in fighting shape during the show and I was still amazed at some of the stuff he could do.”

Bisping or Henderson?  You Decide...

What about you?  Sound off on who YOU think will come out on top when the dust settles at UFC 100...Henderson or Bisping.  American or Brit?  We'd love your thoughts.

GSP SAYS FLORIAN WILL BE A GREAT CHAMPION

kenny-florian1GSP SAYS FLORIAN WILL BE A GREAT CHAMPION

Friday, July 03, 2009 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

On Aug. 8, Kenny Florian will take a second crack at the UFC lightweight title, this time battling current champion B.J. Penn at UFC 101, and while the Boston native has always had a top-notch camp, he decided to venture out this time for some extra support.

The extra support comes in the form of UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, the only fighter to have two wins over Penn, and who himself is in final preparations for his UFC 100 bout against Thiago Alves.

St. Pierre spoke to MMAWeekly Radio recently about the work he did with Florian in Montreal, and says that it's a good bet that it's "Ken-Flo" who will leave Philadelphia with the championship around his waist.

"I've trained with him two times and he looked really sharp. I put my money on him against B.J. Penn," St. Pierre stated.

The Canadian has put together some of the most legendary camps to prepare for his title fights, so his physical and mental strategy could be a key edge that Florian will carry into the fight in August.

St. Pierre complemented Florian for the work they did together while in Montreal, and he's confident that Penn will have no answer for what Florian will bring into the title fight.

"Kenny Florian is a great training partner, and is going to be a great champion, and he's also a greater person and human being (than B.J. Penn)," said St. Pierre.

Much like his own strategy and gameplan, he wouldn't let anything out of the bag as to what Florian will do to beat Penn, but he is boastful that it will happen.

"A lot of things, but they are part of his gameplan so I can't talk too much about it," St. Pierre commented about what Florian will bring into the fight against Penn. "It basically consists of using his strength and putting it against his opponent's weaknesses."

Following his upcoming title fight against Alves, St. Pierre will then head straight back into camp to help his friend and training partner Nate Marquardt get ready for his September fight against Demian Maia.

Still, if time permits, he says he'd love to be in Philadelphia to sit front row for Kenny Florian vs. B.J. Penn.

"I would like to see that," St. Pierre said in closing about Florian winning the title.

LAWLOR READY FOR MIDDLEWEIGHT MOVE AT UFC 100

7256-Tom-Lawlor-0001LAWLOR READY FOR MIDDLEWEIGHT MOVE AT UFC 100

Friday, July 03, 2009 - by Brian Lopez-Benchimol - MMAWeekly.com

A natural athlete, Tom Lawlor first made himself known to mixed martial arts fans around the world with his stint on Season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter. Part of Team Mir, Lawlor won his preliminary fight against Ryan Lopez via rear naked choke, allowing him to continue in the competition and make his way into one of the most controversial seasons of said show.

Though he would eventually lose in the quarterfinals to light heavyweight winner Ryan Bader, Lawlor left a lot to be remembered.

More infamously known for ‘tainted’ fruits and a highlight reel knockout of good friend, teammate, and lightweight competitor Dave Kaplan, who claimed he couldn’t be knocked out, after a drunken debauchery filled rant.

Proving his worth, the Massachusetts native was invited on the undercard of the season eight finale this past December against fellow TUF veteran Kyle Kingsbury. Proving why he was a three-time NCWA (National Collegiate Wrestling Association) champion for the University of Central Florida, he earned the judges' nod by defeating Team Nogueira’s unofficial leader via unanimous decision.

Making the move to the middleweight division, “The Filthy Mauler” will look to impress once again when he takes on fellow wrestling and Ultimate Fighter standout C.B. Dollaway at the historic UFC 100 event on July 11 in Las Vegas.

While a guest on the MMAWeekly.com radio show, the always-colorful Lawlor shared his thoughts on the decision to move to the middleweight division and how his time spent on the Ultimate Fighter hindered the movement.

“I learned it real early on in the season. When we got in the house and all the other guys, as most of you saw, were eating my food and I started looking around and I’m thinking ‘man, I really want to go after these guys and beat the crap out of them,'" explained Lawlor.

“But Junie (Browning) had already push-kicked me to the ground; he was a 155’er. I didn’t feel like picking a fight with these guys that were 225 and cutting to 205, so I’m like, Junie's at 155, I’m scared to go down to that weight, those guys have good push kicks. These 205’ers are pretty big, so I think I’ll settle in between."MMAPartners Read More

Ultimate Fighter 10 Cast To Be Revealed July 10

tankkimbo1The dust has settled from TUF9's great season finale, the cuts and bruises are healing and all that's left us fight fans, is wanting The Ultimate Fighter 10 already.  As you might remember, TUF10 is going to be an entirely new idea:  instead of featuring different weight classes, it will be entirely about the big boys, the heavyweights.  The good news is, we're officially only 8 days away from finding out exactly which big boys are going to be stepping into the Octagon and taking on The Ultimate Fighter.

UFC Fan Expo to Announce Fighters

If you're in the area, the UFC Fan Expo will be the forum at which they're going to officially announce the fighters chosen for this monumental 10th season of TUF.  SpikeTV and UFC head honchos have both confirmed that Friday, July 10th, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada we're going to get an earful of who is fighting, and fans lucky enough to be there will be able to get autographs and actually talk to the fighters.  The question is, who do we think is going to be there?  Here is a brief list of the unconfirmed fighters that are rumored to be aboard already:

"Kimbo Slice (3-1)
Roy Nelson (13-4)
Wes Sims (22-12-1)
Marcus Jones (4-1)
Matt Mitrione (0-0)
Wes Shivers (N/A)
Jim York (10-2)
Justin Wren (6-1)
Mike Wessel (6-1)
Scott Junk (6-2-1)
Zak Jensen (7-3)
Darrill Schoonover (10-0)
Brendan Schaub (4-0)
Jon Madsen (1-0)
Tom Blackledge (8-6)
Abe Wagner (6-2)"

The show is currently in production but unfortunately we won't be actually watching these heavyweights do battle until September 16, 2009.  The only true confirmed fighter is famed street-fighter and YouTube legend Kimbo Slice.  How he'll do remains to be seen, but it'd be great to see him in the finale that is scheduled (yes, it's already scheduled) for December 5, 2009.

8 Days Left!

So, stick around til next week and you'll get the full scoop of exactly which heavyweights we'll be cheering for, exactly how things could shape up, and let the speculating begin!

TITO ORTIZ CLOSE WITH STRIKEFORCE, WANTS FEDOR

titoortiz1TITO ORTIZ CLOSE WITH STRIKEFORCE, WANTS FEDOR

Wednesday, July 01, 2009 - by Ken Pishna - MMAWeekly.com

One time UFC poster boy Tito Ortiz hasn't fought in more than a year. And it's been nearly three years since he last won a fight.

Plagued by back problems for several years, his last bout was a loss to current UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Prior to that, a draw with former UFC champion Rashad Evans and a loss to another former UFC champion in Chuck Liddell.

But following back surgery in October of 2008, Ortiz has recently been cleared to train full speed ahead.

"My doctor just released me. I feel great. My cardio is great. I'm excited to get back in there. I'm 100-percent, no more pain running down my back."

In a seemingly revolving door of endless negotiations, the former UFC champion sounds as if he is nearing the time when he will set foot back in the cage, once again ready to compete.

"I'm in negotiations right now with Strikeforce and working with CBS and Showtime, so all three of us are going back and forth to make a contract that makes sense to me," he told MMAWeekly.com recently.

"Hopefully by October I'll be competing. We're finishing the contract I'd say with CBS, Showtime, and Strikeforce and making a deal that UFC can't match."

If that deal does come to fruition, Ortiz says he's ready and has his near future already mapped out.

"I feel sorry for the person they have me fight, but I do need one warm-up fight," he said. "I managed to come off a huge back surgery. It's been a year since I've competed. I think one warm-up fight to get things going."

But after that, it's full speed ahead, and truly so if the fight he mentions does end up taking place.

"After that, I don't want no more warm-up fights. I'm hoping by my fourth fight, possibly fight Fedor Emelianenko at a catchweight. That'd be something that I'm looking forward to possibly by the middle of next year."

ALAN BELCHER AIN’T NO STEPPIN’ STONE

alan_belcher2ALAN BELCHER AIN'T NO STEPPIN' STONE

Thursday, July 02, 2009 - by Steven Marrocco - MMAWeekly.com

Alan Belcher (14-5) is all about shortcuts.

The middleweight is perfectly positioned to make an early statement against Japanese import Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 100, the talented, if flawed, superstar who made headlines by bolting stateside. He’s first on the card – that’s the rumor, he says – and gets the chance to make the first impression on what could be hundreds of thousands of fresh eyeballs.

A win over Akiyama, quite simply, means bigger paydays and an invitation to the realm of contenders.

“We thought that it would give me a shortcut to the top,” Belcher said about taking the fight. “This is one where I can really show myself to a lot of new fans, and show people that think I’m the top contender that I really am.”

The Biloxi, Miss., resident has always been confident of his abilities, but that confidence has sometimes led him to be shortsighted. Like many fighters who enter the UFC with standout skills in one realm of fighting, Belcher has lived through a reality check: you can never underestimate an opponent, or think you’ll be carried by one part of your game.

“I always look at the pros and cons of every situation; I don’t like to make the mistakes I have in the past and try and get confident over one little thing,” he said. “I know my advantages, but I think they’re kind of slim, and I’m going to have to work hard and especially to win the way I want to. I want to make a statement.”

That statement, of course, is a knockout, the pot of gold to every striker’s rainbow. Belcher expects Akiyama to stand and trade. On paper, he thinks he comes out on top.

“I’ll throw straight, crisp, technical strikes, and he’s kind of wide,” said Belcher. “He’s also going to have trouble reaching me. But I’m expecting him to be really tough. I’m also expecting him to be as strong as me or stronger, so I’m not really looking at the size. Also, he doesn’t have to cut weight probably, and I do.”

But that would be getting ahead of himself. Along with champion kickboxer Duke Roufus, he has pinning machine Ben Askren for wrestling and Eric “Red” Schafer for jiu-jitsu, guys who helped engineer his guillotine victory over another Japanese import – by way of Canada and Korea – Denis Kang, at UFC 93.

If the action hits the mat, he won’t just hold for a stand-up.MMAPartners

Mir vs. Lesnar II: Mir Predicts Victory

ufc81_brock_lesnar_vs_frank_mirThe days are counting down faster than ever, and we're closer to UFC 100 than I can even believe.  While the days between now and then will continue to seem excruciatingly long, before we know it we'll all be sitting happily on our couches watching Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir once step in and take each other on.  Not surprisingly, both men think they have the upper hand when it comes to taking home the victory.

Mir Leg Locks Lesnar In First Match

Also not surprisingly, reports are already coming in that this is predicted to be the most successful UFC event in history, and the most successful MMA event as well.  Part of that drawing power is indeed attributed to Mir and Lesnar stepping into the Octagon to test each other again.  You probably remember the first time the two did battle...for 80 seconds straight, Lesnar dominated the fight against Mir and even had him in trouble a few times.  It only took a millisecond, however, and Mir picked out an opening and submitted Lesnar via a leg lock.  It was impressive, and apparently Lesnar has learned a lot from it.

Mir Respects Lesnar's Strength

Perhaps Lesnar learned, but according to Frank Mir, if he goes into the event cocky, he could have some issues with a man of Lesnar's size, but when it comes to stand up or ground game, it shouldn't be much of a problem.  He was quoted recently as saying:

“Anybody that size that gets behind a punch and sits down on it can catch me on the chin. If I’m cocky and put my hands down, obviously it will be a short night for me and I can go home and cry about it later. The fighter I was then compared to the fighter I am now is leaps and bounds. If he chooses to stand up, I’ll knock him out. If he chooses to take me down, I’ll submit him.”

How does Lesnar Feel?

Whether or not that will happen, and how Lesnar feels about that remains to be seen, but I'm sure before UFC 100, we'll hear an earful of what Lesnar has to say about Mir, the fight, and his chances to take the title.  All I know is, we can't Wait.

G4 SAYS THERE’S ROOM FOR TWO MMA VIDEO GAMES

g4G4 SAYS THERE'S ROOM FOR TWO MMA VIDEO GAMES

Wednesday, July 01, 2009 - by Mick Hammond - MMAWeekly.com

In the modern sports lexicon, it’s become just as important for a sport to have success not only on its own field of play, but in the mass media as well.

Fueled by fans who want to step into the shoes of their favorite athletes and live their own sports fantasies, the video game industry has seen its importance to sports grow at an exponential rate.

None has this shown more clearly than this past May, when publisher THQ released UFC 2009: Undisputed, a game that went on to become the best selling game for the month of its release.

MMAWeekly.com caught up with Blair Herter, chief correspondent for the G4 television network’s X-Play series to discuss the success of UFC 2009: Undisputed, as well as the recent announcement that video game giant Electronic Arts is going to step into the cage with its own release.

“To be honest with you, I would say that’s a really solid game,” said Herter of UFC 2009: Undisputed. “Obviously, there are certain holes in it, but basically when you’re building a game engine and a new game itself, there’s going to be certain things you wish to improve on or have done better.

“As a whole, what THQ tried to do – creating an accessible game for all fans – I think they did a really good job in that.”

For the most part, critics and fans alike have echoed Herter’s sentiments of THQ’s effort; over 1,000,000 copies of the game sold in May alone.

“I’m excited that people get behind this sort of thing,” stated Herter. “I think it just speaks volumes for about how large this sport really is. The fact that they moved so many copies without selling them at events is just phenomenal.

“Because it sold so well, I think there’s going to be more money dedicated to this game, and it will only drive the game further in development and only be a better game (next time around) because of it.”

Like in other forms of media, if something is successful then it’s inevitable that others will want to get in on the act. Thus shortly after the release of Undisputed, Electronic Arts decided it should enter the fray with the announcement of its EA Sports: MMA game.

Herter responded to the announcement of EA getting involved in the MMA video game market by saying, “I think EA definitely has the money to put behind it, and are going to make a great game out if it, because there’s already a great game out there (by THQ).MMAPartners Read More

PAUL BUENTELLO: “EVERYBODY’S COUNTING ME OUT”

kotc041114-buentelloPAUL BUENTELLO: "EVERYBODY'S COUNTING ME OUT"

Wednesday, July 01, 2009 - by Steven Marrocco - MMAWeekly.com

The hype train hasn’t even begun to roll yet, and Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello (27-10) feels he’s been cast as the underdog for his fight with Gilbert Yvel at Affliction "Trilogy." And that’s exciting to him, because there’s nowhere to go but up.

“Everybody’s already counting me out. I’ve gotta be able to do this, and be able to do that, and I love being in that position,” said Buentello. “I don’t like being in the top position. I love being counted out.”

The 35-year-old Texan doesn’t name his accusers, and says the pessimists are "people giving their opinion." He often takes cues from Internet message boards, and likes to have fun with the MMA public’s perception of him, frequently enlisting fans to provide feedback on his career path. Apparently, somebody out there doesn't like the match-up.

Five weeks ago, Buentello began training with the knowledge he’d be back in the ring on Aug. 1, against whom he didn’t know. Gilbert Yvel emerged as his opponent for Affliction “Trilogy,” earning a spot on the event’s main card with a blistering knockout of veteran Pedro Rizzo.

Until the event, Buentello will reside at American Kickboxing Academy, getting ready to combat Yvel’s stand-up centered attack.

Buentello says he hasn’t shot for a takedown once in his career, and unless Yvel offers him a surefire way to get on top, doesn’t plan on making an exception.

His trainer, Bob Cook, says his pay will be earned that night.

“This is going to be a long night, your cardio has to be really, really good,” said Buentello.

It’s safe to say that he will face a far greater challenge than his last fight, against Kiril “Baby Fedor” Sidelnikov, who he systematically punished for three rounds before the referee took mercy on the Russian. Sidelnikov later tested positive for steroids and was suspended for a year by the California State Athletic Commission.

Yvel, now under the tutelage of MMA pioneer John Lewis, appears to have turned a corner in his training. He's more patient and less “Hurricane.” Still, he retains the aura of a bully who’s sudden streaks of violence – whether in or out of the ring – destroy fighters who let him play his game. Those who take him to the ground are virtually guaranteed a chance to be not only competitive, but dominant.MMAPartners Read More

JENSEN AND MILLER WIN IN PITTSBURGH MMA DEBUT

KyleJensenJENSEN AND MILLER WIN IN PITTSBURGH MMA DEBUT

Sunday, June 28, 2009 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

PITTSBURGH, PA – For the first ever MMA event in the city of Pittsburgh, the crowd of 5,109 in attendance were treated to an exciting event overall, but disappointed after the main event between Rich Clementi and Kyle Jensen ended prematurely when Clementi suffered a broken clavicle at just :45 seconds in the first round.

Clementi and Jensen came after each other early, and after a clinch it was Clementi who went for a throw, but ended up crashing on the mat himself as Jensen reversed the move. As Jensen worked to improve his position, Clementi yelled up to referee Mark Matheny that he broke his collarbone, and immediately the fight was stopped.

Jensen commented after the win how hard he trained for the fight with Clementi, and the former WEC fighter will now look to make his mark at 155lbs after this event.

American Top Team product, Micah Miller, put on a show for the Pittsburgh crowd looking very impressive, submitting J.C. Pennington in the 2nd round of their co-main event fight.

Miller used his reach to light Pennington up when the fight stayed standing, and once on the mat he showed his superior ground game, opening up shots, and moving to a rear naked choke forcing the tap out. Miller, a top featherweight prospect, will now head back home to Florida where he will have another fight on August 1st.

Paul Bradley got a unanimous decision win over Leonardo Pecahana, as he makes his transition to the welterweight division, but didn't impress the crowd in attendance as the fight lulled for much action at all. Bradley obviously didn't want much to do with Pecahana's jiu-jitsu game so he waited until late in each 5-minute session to take the fight to the mat, pulling out just enough in each round to get the victory.

For the second time in his young career, Jason Trzewizczynski defeated local Pittsburgh talent, Joe Demore, this time by unanimous decision. Trzewizczynski used a powerful jiu-jitsu game to keep Demore guessing throughout all three rounds, and landed a nice head kick in the third session to keep the advantage to close out the fight.

Trzewizczynski also paid tribute to the fallen "King of Pop" Michael Jackson by using his song "Smooth Criminal" as his entrance into the Mellon Arena.MMAPartners Read More

LASHLEY DEFEATS SAPP, YVEL KO’S RIZZO AT “ULTIMATE CHAOS”

bobby-lashley2LASHLEY DEFEATS SAPP, YVEL KO'S RIZZO AT "ULTIMATE CHAOS"

Sunday, June 28, 2009 - by MMAWeekly.com Staff

BILOXI, Miss. – Bobby Lashley took super heavyweight Bob “The Beast" Sapp to the mat immediately following the opening bell and used his improved ground-and-pound game to win by first-round submission in the main event at “Ultimate Chaos” at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi.

“Going up against Bob,” Lashley said after the fight, “you always expect the big bulls. I had to take him down, cover and pound. The first thing is to win: ground-and-pound to wear the big man down. He has a big punch. I used my ground-and-pound and got out of there.”

“I got a good shot in the eye and was unable to see,” Sapp explained the ending. “He got me in the eye. No excuses, He got me down today and controlled it. Give it up to Bobby Lashley.”

In a devastating display of power striking, Dutch heavyweight Gilbert “The Hurricane” Yvel registered his 31st knockout with five lethal right hands on a fallen Pedro “The Rock” Rizzo at 2:10 of the first round in the co-feature.

“I want to move up to (fight) the champions because I want a belt,” Yvel explained his next move. “I’m learning the ground game. What I did tonight was be patient, relax, and kick-off.”

Veteran Javier “Showtime” Vazquez took pro debuting Mark Kergosian, who was a late replacement for Din “Dinyero” Thomas, to school with a first-round submission by Guillotine choke only 59-seconds into the opening frame.

“I want to thank Mark or I wouldn’t have had a chance to fight tonight,” featherweight Vazquez remarked. “I was looking forward to fighting Din. It’s unfortunate. I’m back! This is my weight class. Very few guys can touch me at 145. That was just a tip of the iceberg.”

Hot 21-year-old lightweight prospect Chris “The Polish” Horodecki won by submission for the first time, using a rear naked choke to force William “The Bull” Sryyapai to tap-out in round one.

Waachim “Native Warrior” Spirit Wolf unleashed a barrage of punches to stop a dazed Brett Cooper at 1:04 of the opening round of their welterweight fight.MMAPartners Read More

St. Pierre & Alves: Destined To Meet?

georges-st-pierre1Looks like our old friend Georges St. Pierre might have to add psychic to his already impressive resume.  According to reports by the UFC, St. Pierre says that the very first time he ever saw Thaigo Alves fight, he knew that one day the two would meet up in the Octagon to do battle.  In a few short days, that prediction will come true and we'll get to see if St. Pierre's psychic vision of the future included him winning, or losing to the fighter he knew he was destined to fight.

ESP?

According to St. Pierre:

“When I first saw him fighting, I knew he was going to be a potential opponent..."

Newcomer Impresses Vet

The funny thing is, when St. Pierre first saw him fight, Alves was just starting out, while Georges was already one of the best and toughest fighters at 170lbs in the world, already having a 4-1 victory and pushing forward with a three fight winning streak.  How did he know back then that Alves would be a force to reckoned with?  Good question.

St. Pierre Has Healthy Respect For Alves

Nevertheless, when the two finally do step into the Octagon together, one thing is for sure:  Expect fireworks.  One other thing is also for sure, St. Pierre respects Alves as a fighter and thinks he has a better chance than anyone he's faced before at beating him.  St. Pierre said, according to the UFC:

“I truly believe he’s the biggest challenge that I’ve faced so far...I truly believe that if you put Thiago Alves and BJ Penn in a fight, I would bet all my money on Thiago Alves, no doubt about it. This fight, for a lot of people, seems less dangerous for me because Thiago Alves is a gentleman. He’s not somebody who needs to trash talk to promote himself. He’s a very respectful guy, but that makes him even more dangerous. Skillwise, he’s bringing a lot more problems to the table than anybody that I’ve fought before.”

Alves A Force

Considering the fact that Alves is bringing into the fight amazing jiu-jitsu, a great background and great team with American Top Team and a great deal of size and strength, St. Pierre might have issues.  I know this, despite the majority of the spotlight on Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir, my eyes are going to be waiting for this fight.

Saturday, June 27, 2009 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

With champion Jamie Varner sidelined for an undetermined amount of time, the WEC has opted to put No. 1 contender, Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone and Ben Henderson together for an interim lightweight title fight on Sept. 2 in Youngstown, Ohio.

The bout agreements have been issued and both fighters are expected to sign for the fight, which will mark the WEC's first appearance in the state of Ohio, and the first major MMA show to hit the city of Youngstown.

The show is expected to emanate from the Covelli Center in Youngstown, which plays home to Mahoney Valley Thunder, a semi-professional football team, and is the main arena in city for sporting and music events.

The fight between Cerrone and Henderson will serve as the main event for WEC 43 but at this time no other bouts have been determined for the September card.

Cerrone and Henderson enter this bout on strange terms, as the two fighters considered each other friends. Henderson has actually lobbied Cerrone to come to Arizona to train in the past.

Friendship will be put aside, however, as Cerrone takes his second shot at WEC gold after dropping a decision to Varner earlier this year. Henderson looks to make the biggest jump in his young career as he vies for the championship in his 11th professional fight.

The bout also marks the first time that the WEC has utilized an interim championship.

Stay tuned to MMAWeekly.com for more information on this card as it becomes available.MMAPartners

EDDIE ALVAREZ PUTS ON THE BRAKES

eddieEDDIE ALVAREZ PUTS ON THE BRAKES

Saturday, June 27, 2009 - by Steven Marrocco - MMAWeekly.com

Reports that Eddie Alvarez was Japan bound this fall spread quickly after his lightweight championship run in Bellator FC.

Initially, the word was that Alvarez’s contract with the tournament based promotion ruled out a bout with Tatsuya Kawajiri for Dream in September.

After speaking with Alvarez rep Monte Cox and Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney this week, the story is the same, but the reason is a little different.

Alvarez just wants a break.

“Just hanging out at the pool with Eddie after the (Bellator) win, I can tell you that all Eddie wants to do is relax and eat some pizza,” said Rebney.

“We agreed that win or lose, he would take three months off,” Cox agreed. “He’s had like six fights in a year, and at the level of fights he’s fighting, not too many bums in there. He’s had a heck of a run. If he’s going to take July, August, and September off, he’s not going to fight in September, that’s for sure. It doesn’t give him any time to train.”

Rebney echoed an earlier interview with MMAWeekly.com where he opened the door to fighter loan-outs that made sense, and said a future Alvarez appearance overseas might be possible.

“If Eddie came back and said, ‘man, I’d like to get back in the cage,’ (around a) September time frame, and there was the right opportunity out there, be it in Japan or wherever, I’d talk about it and we’d figure out if there was a way to make it work,” said Rebney.

Bellator’s second season is targeted to begin in October, and will focus on a challenger tournament to determine four contenders to the current titleholders in the featherweight through middleweight classes. An announcement on the promotion’s broadcast partners is forthcoming.

Rebney and Cox expect Alvarez to sit out four to five months as the next challenger is groomed. If he wants a fight before that, a sit-down will be needed.MMAPartners

JOEY VILLASENOR IS BACK, TAKING AIM AT BIG NAMES

JoeyJOEY VILLASENOR IS BACK, TAKING AIM AT BIG NAMES

Friday, June 26, 2009 - by Mick Hammond - MMAWeekly.com

As someone once said, “Good things come to those who wait.”

That has never been more evident than it was recently for Strikeforce middleweight contender Joey Villasenor.

After a year in limbo, predicated by the downfall of EliteXC and numerous fight delays, he finally returned to action last Friday victorious over Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos at the second edition of ShoMMA: Strikeforce Challengers Series on Showtime.

“I put my head down and kept working,” said Villasenor to MMAWeekly.com about his year out of the cage. “It was frustrating, don’t get me wrong, but I definitely feel like I’ve gotten better.

“If anything, it put everything in perspective. For instance, all my teammates know how much I hate to cut weight, but I missed it. I missed those challenges of making weight, and really enjoying all those little things that I didn’t like before about fighting.”

Despite the hard fought split-decision battle with Santos, Villasenor admits he loved every minute of getting back into the fight game.

“The week of the fight was a great experience for me to do it all over again,” he elated. “I actually was all smiles in the cage – even though I had my serious face on – I was just glad to be back in there, and was appreciating the whole process of having a fight.”

Perhaps sensing it was his last chance at a big show, Santos fought differently than he had in previous bouts, becoming a cautious, methodical counter-striker, which definitely threw Villasenor for a curve at first.

“The game plan we had for him we had to totally adjust, because the Santos we faced wasn’t the one people are used to watching,” stated the Greg Jackson-trained fighter. “I think I fought the best Santos that’s shown himself – he’s definitely worked on his game and performance.MMAPartners Read More

UFC’S RATNER HOLDS HOPE FOR N.Y. MMA IN 2009

UFC07UFC'S RATNER HOLDS HOPE FOR N.Y. MMA IN 2009

Friday, June 26, 2009 - by Steven Marrocco - MMAWeekly.com

The past two weeks have not been kind to the UFC’s interests in New York. Turmoil within the Senate has ground to a halt its legislative business and impeded the state assembly.

Day two of the Senate’s special session wrapped up Wednesday in near total chaos, with representatives feuding over control of the proceedings and refusing to address bills placed on the agenda by the Governor.

In other words, a fight is getting in the way of fights in New York.

UFC president Dana White has long had his eye on Madison Square Garden, promising an event there by the end of the year.

Senate bill S2165A and assembly bill 2009-B, which seek to legalize MMA in the Empire State, have remained in committee since the battle broke out.

There has been no indication the Senate version of MMA legislation will be heard.

On the assembly side, multiple legislators MMAWeekly.com spoke to said there were no special sessions planned for the myriad of bills left on its desk, but none ruled out the chance of going back to Albany.

But Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner doesn’t hear any singing just yet.

“Here’s my feeling as to what’s going to happen: Eventually, the Senate’s going to have to get back in session,” Ratner told MMAWeekly.com. “Once the Senate’s back in session, they're going to have to pass some bills. Then the Assembly’s going to have to come back before the end of the year or before the end of summer and they’re going to have to look at some of these bills. The session is, at this moment, over. But this is my prediction: they’re going to have to meet again.”

Of course, if the assembly decides to return before the close of 2009, MMA’s fate will rest in which bills they decide to address. That power lies with the Speaker of the Assembly, representative Sheldon Silver.

“In each of the last several years, the assembly has come back into special session two, sometimes three times after their regular session,” said a staffer for Herman D. Farrell, Jr., chair of the assembly’s Ways and Means committee where bill 2009-B was stranded. “However, during those special sessions, most of the bills that have been considered are of an economic nature. It is not unheard of for program bills to be considered during special session, but it’s not common.”

Ratner said the sheer volume of unfinished business actually improved his company’s chances.

“There’s going to be a lot of bills out there that only one house has passed,” he said. “I think the assembly passed around 150 or 200 bills in the last couple of days before they adjourned. So if the Senate changes any of those, they’re going to have to come back, they’re going to have to have some compromises. So I feel there’s still a chance that it will be done this year. Maybe I’m being more optimistic than some, but that’s the way I feel.”MMAPartners

Bisping To Out-Wrestle Dan Henderson at UFC 100?

bispingWhen it comes to the UFC, there is already more speculation, opinion and guesstimating going on than in any other UFC event in history.  Can you blame us?!  One look at the fight card solidifies that we're all going to have a blast watching our predictions play out.  Turns out, we're not the only ones with predictions and Michael Bisping's wrestling coach has been pretty vocal about how he thinks things will pan out between his star student and Dan Henderson.

Henderson is Former Olympian

Henderson, as you probably know, is a former Olympic wrestler.  Basically, that means his wrestling game in his MMA arsenal is absolutely impressive.  Zach Light thinks that despite this fact, Bisping's wrestling will be better at UFC 100 and will end up giving him the fight.  While his opinion is a bit biased, Light is Bisping's wrestling coach after all, you have to wonder if this could even possibly be true after watching Bisping get dominated by other fighter's wrestling.  He couldn't handle it with Rashad Evans, and he couldn't handle it against Matt Hamil, so the training must have been intense to give them this kind of confidence against Henderson.

Light Sounds Off...

Nevertheless, here's what Light had to say:

“He will take Dan Henderson down more than one time in the fight. He will, that’s how he is going to win the fight. That is how I see it. When they start trading I think Mike will win the scrambles. Dan is a great scrambler but in a scramble situation I think Mike is going to come out on top every time. [Bisping] is fighting a guy that I have competed against, in the sense that Rampage fought him before. What I have done is basically helped him complete his strategy for the fight. Wrestling-wise I am probably one of the best MMA-wrestling trainers in the world at the moment. There is no doubt in my mind that he will end this fight before the third round.”

UFC 100 Will Tell the Tale

We'll see what happens come UFC 100, but when it comes to wrestling, our money is still on Dan Henderson for total control.  What are your thoughts?

Frank Mir Talks UFC 100 & Brock Lesnar

On MMA blogs it's only natural that we do quite a bit of speculating.  We all toss out opinions on how fights will shape up, how fighters will handle certain situations and matchups, and how certain MMA events will go down.  Sometimes, it's nice to hear from the fighters themselves, and today we're gonna check out a video where Frank Mir does exactly that...he talks about UFC 100, Brock Lesnar, and what he thinks will happen when the fight finally goes down in July.

UFC 100 Already Exciting Fans

As you already know, the entire MMA world and any fan of the sport is already frothing at the mouth for not only the main fight between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir, but just about every single fight on the amazingly impressive fight card that fills out UFC 100.  Many are already speculating at how the Mir/Lesnar fight will end, many saying that the sheer size, weight and brute strength mixed with wrestling skills of Lesnar will overwhelm Mir and he won't be able to get out of the way.  Many others are saying Mir's superiour technical skills on the ground and great stand-up will override the huge size advantage and give him the edge.

Technique Over Power?

Turns out, that's exactly what Frank Mir thinks will happen.  It's great to see this video and witness how he bounced back from the devestating loss to Brandon Vera to come on stronger than ever in the UFC.  At any rate, at least we get to see the upcoming UFC 100 through one of the fighter's eyes...Speculations can stop.

NOONS BACK TO MMA IN 2009, STRIKEFORCE LIKELY

kj-noonsNOONS BACK TO MMA IN 2009, STRIKEFORCE LIKELY

Thursday, June 25, 2009 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

The last time MMA fans saw K.J. Noons he was blasting his way through his firs title defense as the EliteXC lightweight champion, but lately the native Hawaiian has gone back to his first love, which is the sport of boxing. While no deal has been made yet, Noons says MMA fans shouldn't forget about him, because he'll be back, and it will be before the end of 2009.

Rumors circled earlier this year that Noons was set to sign on with the UFC, and then just recently the news started to swirl that the last ever EliteXC lightweight champion would end up with Strikeforce. According to Noons, all of the news about him signing is pre-mature at this point and he's still focused on boxing… for now.

"I'm for sure getting (an MMA) fight in before the year is out," Noons told MMAWeekly Radio recently. "I've got the Aug. 22 boxing, and then I might have one in September. I don't know. I don't want to look past Aug. 22. And then I'm going to gear up and get ready for MMA for a couple months and fight somebody by the end of the year. I'm ready."

With nothing official yet, Noons is in talks with Strikeforce about a return to action in MMA, and owner Scott Coker seems willing to allow the young fighter a chance to continue his pursuit of excellence in boxing, as well.

"I'm in talks with Scott (Coker) at Strikeforce and we're just talking and just trying to see, and he's real flexible and he's willing to work with me," Noons commented. "I told him that's just my passion, boxing; so he's willing to work with that and work around that. We're just picking some dates and trying to figure out what would be the best for myself and him as far as his promotion and a fight for me in MMA coming up later in the year."

Since his exit from EliteXC, Noons has stopped working with former manager Mark Dion, and is now concentrating on working for himself and finding the best deal possible.MMAPartners Read More

NEW CAMP GIVES JOE STEVENSON NEW LIFE

joe-stevensonNEW CAMP GIVES JOE STEVENSON NEW LIFE

Thursday, June 25, 2009 - by Brian Lopez-Benchimol - MMAWeekly.com

First bursting on to the mainstream MMA scene due to his stint on “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, former King of the Cage champion Joe Stevenson quickly made a name for himself in his new home with the UFC. Winning the second season's welterweight title against Luke Cummo in what Dana White described as "...in my opinion, ladies and gentlemen, that was Stephan Bonnar and Forrest Griffin, only on the ground,” a remark that speaks volumes of Stevenson’s character and ability.

While an eventual drop to the lightweight division was eminent once the UFC re-introduced the forgotten weight class, Stevenson originally took the opportunity by storm. Going 4-0 at 155 – racking up wins over veteran Yves Edwards, Melvin Guillard, and Kurt Pellegrino – had cemented his spot at the time as the clear number one contender for the than vacant title.

Though he fought valiantly, it wasn’t meant to be as B.J. Penn went on to win their bout at UFC 81 in New Castle, England, to capture the title.

Since then, Stevenson has had his share of bad luck, sandwiching a win over Gleison Tibau between the loss to Penn and two more consecutive losses to top flight competition in Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez, respectively.

Coming on the heels of two losses, the former title challenger was in dire straits. A man who once adorned the rank of a top ten fighter in his weight class, he was looking to recapture some of the luster that had been missing from his career as of late.

Not only was the move from his Las Vegas surroundings to Greg Jackson's camp down in Albuquerque, N.M., a necessity, but it proved to be the difference in his most recent performance (picking up a unanimous decision victory over fellow TUF winner Nate Diaz this past weekend at the season finale of The Ultimate Fighter Season 9).

“It was pretty much everything,” Stevenson stated of the difference made in his performance with his time spent with Jackson's camp.

“Everything that I had was already there; it was just putting it together and understanding myself better. I thought I had a pretty good understanding of myself but evidently I didn’t.”

Singing Jackson's praises now, Stevenson admitted that the idea of traveling to New Mexico and staying there for an extended amount of time was a bit taxing. Without the persuasion of good friend and fellow TUF 2 winner Rashad Evans, the move may not have ever happened.MMAPartners

SYLVIA WILL STILL FIGHT; ADRENALINE WILL RETURN

tim_sylviaSYLVIA WILL STILL FIGHT; ADRENALINE WILL RETURN

Wednesday, June 24, 2009 - by Steven Marrocco - MMAWeekly.com

Adrenaline MMA promoter Monte Cox says in the fight business, things can go either way.

Things like your choice of fights, venue, and production budget. It can take very little to change a proposed MMA show. Just like the fights, the margin for error is slim – especially when you’re in a foreign territory.

“Anytime you go somewhere for the first time, you’re always going to encounter resistance,” said Cox. “You have hometown promoters that don’t want you there; you don’t really know who the local fighters are that draw; you don’t know where to go to get the best sponsors. And you’re not always treated fairly because you’re the out of town guy.”

At one point or another, Cox faced challenges with all the above elements when he promoted Adrenaline 3 in Birmingham, Ala., last week. The one that made headlines was tough enough: New Jersey and The Association of Boxing Commissions saying a collective “no” to a boxing bout between main eventers Tim Sylvia and Ray Mercer. Until the day of the weigh-ins, there was no fight. At the last minute, it was changed to an MMA event, favoring Sylvia.

There were other struggles that remained off the record.

When all was said and done, Sylvia and Mercer delivered, even if the result was exactly the opposite of what Cox, also Sylvia’s manager, expected or wanted. Sylvia showed up at 300-plus pounds wanting to trade with the former heavyweight boxing champion and got knocked senseless in nine seconds, prompting calls for early retirement.

Cox, however, is positive about the overall experience and wants to do it again in September.

“I think there’s a need for it, not just for that level of fighter, but there are lots of guys trying to either make a name or start their comeback,” he said.

While there were more front-end costs that took from profits, Cox is confident he can turn that around next time.

“We’ll be way more successful,” he said. “I feel like I know what needs to be done in Birmingham now.”

Meanwhile, longtime properties Extreme Challenge and ICE will go on, local shows with reliable margins and loyal customers.

Cox says Sylvia won’t retire.

“He’s an MMA fighter, that’s what he does for a living,” said the big man's manager. “He’s got to keep fighting – he’s too young to quit.”MMAPartners

ERIN TOUGHILL ON TIME WARP, STRIKEFORCE SIGNING

erin1ERIN TOUGHILL ON TIME WARP, STRIKEFORCE SIGNING

Wednesday, June 24, 2009 - by Mick Hammond - MMAWeekly.com

It’s not uncommon to see MMA fighters appearing on myriad of television networks, doing a multitude of things.

One of the more unique opportunities outside the sport that has presented itself to athletes was an opportunity to showcase techniques at up to 100,000 times their normal speed on the Discovery Channel’s popular Time Warp series.

Not only did UFC star Kenny Florian help launch the show on its pilot episode, but he recently returned with Dan and Dave Camarillo along with female sensation and American Gladiators star Erin Toughill for the most recent episode, premiering Wednesday night at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific.

MMAWeekly.com caught up with Toughill to talk about her experience on Time Warp, as well as what’s next for her in her fighting career.

“Apparently one of the producers on the show, Rudy (Fischmann), trains and is a brown belt in jiu-jitsu, and is pretty knowledgeable about the sport,” said Toughill on how she got involved with the series. “They wanted a handful of people that represented each discipline to the best of their abilities, and I know he wanted to pick one woman in particular.

“I guess he was a fan of mine and requested I be in there. He picked me specifically for the striking element – the punches and elbows – so that was a big honor and pretty awesome.”

Toughill, along with the Camarillo brothers, traveled to Boston and met up with Florian for a day’s worth of taping that included Florian working Muay Thai, the brothers demonstrating judo and jiu-jitsu, and Toughill the aforementioned striking game.

“They wanted me to hit this guy in the stomach, and it was the craziest thing seeing all the (impact energy) flow,” stated Toughill. “Kenny and I did this one part where he was holding a watermelon and I hit it, they caught it in slow motion and it just exploded, that was pretty awesome.”

When MMAWeekly.com spoke to Time Warp host Jeff Lieberman in May, he specifically mentioned being hit by Toughill, and how he wouldn’t want to do it again any time in the near future.

“I think sometimes it still freaks people out who don’t know the sport that a woman can do that stuff,” commented Toughill. “I didn’t even hit him hard, but they had a very visceral reaction to it.

“I think I did a little punch on the other host and he had the same reaction. It was just so strange to them that they had a female do that to them, and they were a little shocked.”
